Emboo Safari Camp: leading the charge with electric safari vehicles in Kenya
Located in the heart of Kenya’s Masai Mara, Emboo Camp is quietly leading a revolution in sustainable tourism.
As one of Africa’s true carbon-neutral pioneers, Emboo was built with nature at its heart. Founders Valery and Loïc, along with their passionate team, made it their mission to solve every sustainability challenge before designing a single tent, with every decision protecting and preserving the landscape they love.
Solar energy powers not just the whole camp but every vehicle, they have a closed loop water system which recycles grey water and ensures not a drop is wasted, and a biogas unit turning leftover food into gas for the kitchen.
Emboo was the first camp in Kenya with a full fleet of electric vehicles, all powered by solar, ensuring a silent, zero-emissions experience that benefits both wildlife and travellers alike. This is no simple task to convert and maintain, but the benefits are too many to ignore.
It’s not just about the removal of the emissions, noise and smell of diesel. They move silently across the Mara’s vast plains, allowing travellers to truly immerse themselves in nature.
Without the background rumble of an engine, both guide and guests can use all of their senses and not miss a single sound – they will hear the sound of a bird alarm call in the trees, perhaps signalling a leopard on the prowl nearby. The lack of engine start-up spluttering when repositioning the vehicle for better light, or departing a wildlife sighting, avoids the usual stress and startle. The wildlife can simply carry on with their day undisturbed, allowing guests to witness more natural behaviour.
These vehicles aren’t just a huge plus for the environment, they create a deeper and more respectful relationship between people and the wilderness they are privileged to explore. Birders love hearing a new lifer before they see it, and getting far more sightings for their list thanks to the peaceful approach, too.
Have you ever experienced a silent game drive in an electric vehicle? If not, come and visit Emboo and we’ll spoil all other game drives for life!
